Client Domain/Setup Information

Danen Consulting Services provides DNS hosting, web hosting, and email hosting services to clients. This page details some information required to properly setup your systems to work with the services we provide you.

Server Names

We provide both POP3 and IMAP services, both secured with SSL. The domain name to use is mail.yourdomain.com for both POP3S (SSL-secured POP3) and IMAPS (SSL-secured IMAP). Be sure to check off the "use security" or "use encryption" or similar field in your email client when setting up the account. This will ensure that your mail password is not sent in the clear.

Email Setup

Clients may choose to use their own email clients or may also elect to use our webmail (or a combination of the two); we offer both the Horde and Squirrelmail webmail packages. The webmail is secured via SSL so no sensitive data (passwords, email contents, etc.) are exposed. Webmail is great for "road-warriors" or those who may often be at computers not their own. There is no problem with using both an IMAP/POP3-based client and the webmail together. Clients can connect to their webmail via http://mail.yourdomain.com:2096.

We recommend to our clients the Mozilla Thunderbird email client if you're using Microsoft Windows. This email client is more secure and more robust than Outlook Express. If you are using a Mac, Apple's Mail.app is a fine email client.

When you configure Thunderbird to add an account, follow the wizard and in most cases you should be fine. If you're having trouble receiving email, go into Tools->Account Settings and then select Server Settings. You should have the following defined for a POP3 setup:

  • Server Type: POP3 Mail Server
  • Server Name: mail.yourdomain.com
  • User Name: you@yourdomain.com (ie. your full email address)
  • Use secure connection (SSL) checked (this will set the port to port 995)

The other settings are based on your personal preferences but we recommend that you do not leave messages on the server as this will keep your quota from being used up.

The following should be defined for an IMAP setup:

  • Server Type: IMAP Mail Server
  • Server Name: mail.yourdomain.com
  • User Name: you@yourdomain.com (ie. your full email address)
  • Use secure connection (SSL) checked (this will set the port to 993)

Please note that using IMAP keeps the messages stored on the server rather than on your local computer so be sure to keep the amount of mail on the server to a minimum or you run the risk of using up your quota at which point mail gets bounced to the sender.

If you are a client using our SMTP server to send email (ie. you are a roaming user and you have an agreement in place to relay your mail via our server), ensure that your Outgoing Server (SMTP) settings are configured as follows:

  • Server Name: mail.yourmail.com (port 465)
  • User Name: you@yourdomain.com (user name and password must be checked)
  • Use secure connection: Yes

You must connect on port 465 and use SSL for the connection. You may then either use the plain login type or CRAM-MD5 SMTP authentication. Either way, your connection is encrypted with SSL so your passwords are not sent in the clear.

Web Browser Recommendation

We also recommend using the Mozilla Firefox web browser rather than using Microsoft's Internet Explorer due to Firefox being a superior browser product (not only is it more secure, it's also faster and has a lot of extensions that enhance functionality).
